It’s a lesbian version of the gay hankie code. Back when being gay was still a giant, huge thing that could get you arrested gay men would put handkerchiefs in their back pockets so other guys could see that they were “family” and what they were into without ever having to say anything. It’s also where we get the “gay side” to get your ear pierced, the nipple ring code, and a number of other things.
